Volume Replacement > Procedure Information

Much attention has been focused in the last several years on the loss of volume in the face associated with the aging process. This has led to the development of fillers and stimulants to put volume back into the naturally aging face. Dr. Ott only uses those products which have been proven to be both safe and effective and therefore give value to the patient with minimal risk.

Facial fillers come in many forms and recently more marketing has been devoted to this area of facial improvement than any other.  Hyaluronic acid (Restylane, Perlane, Hylaform) remains a safe and predictable filler. We all have it in our skin naturally so we can’t be allergic to it. It is a true moisturizer because it pulls water into our skin. As we age, we gradually lose this hyaluronic acid and our skin (including our lips) becomes thinner. Since the injection can be painful, Dr. Ott uses an anesthetic to eliminate or reduce the discomfort, depending upon the hyaluronic acid injection site on the face. Best results are seen in the lips and nasolabial folds and to a lesser extent in the marionette lines (from the corner of the mouth to the chin). For most patients, the results last two years in the philtral columns, a year in the lips and 6-8 months in the nasolabial folds and marionette lines.

Radiesse contains particles of hydroxyapetite which stimulates collagen production in the tissue in which it is injected. This can lead to longer lasting results. It is best used to augment the cheek area, the nasolabial folds and marionette areas of the lower lip and chin. It should never be used in the lips.

Sculptra is not a filler but specifically a stimulant for new volume replacement. It was developed and initially given FDA approval for the treatment of tissue atrophy caused as a side affect of certain drugs used to treat HIV positive patients. Due to its good results and safety history, it was given FDA approval as a treatment for normal tissue loss as seen as part of the aging process. It is usually injected in two to three treatment sessions and results occur over a 6 to 12 weeks period. In general, results last two to three years depending upon the areas treated and individual responses. Further injections every two to three years will maintain the volume improvement.
